Local Lib Dems call for consensus on Social Care7.09.58pm GMT Sun 21st Feb 2010 Dr Peter Hirst, the Liberal Democrat, who hopes to be the new MP for Congleton is calling for a common agreement between all the political parties on the funding arrangements for social care for the elderly. Dr Hirst says, "It is obvious that this is becoming a political point-scoring exercise between the other two parties in the run up to the General Election. "At a time of severe pressure on the public finances and a demographic time bomb, it is vital that a long-term arrangement is reached so that whoever wins the General Election, the elderly can be sure of adequate care. He continues "With a significant number of care homes being built or planned in the constituency at the moment the people of South East Cheshire will want to know that there will be the resources to staff them. "Generally the elderly prefer to be cared for at home by people they know. This is often not a cheap option and we need to encourage families and friends to help, knowing that they will not be penalised either financially or otherwise, now or in the future. The Liberal Democrats believe in strong communities that are empowered to care for the elderly. This will happen when there are the mechanisms and incentives in place for them to flourish. It is also essential that the employment, educational and financial barriers are removed," he concludes.
